Position Overview
The General Services Employee I, performs manual work primarily of an unskilled nature but includes some skilled duties of moderate complexity.
Work of this class involves performance of routine manual tasks and semi-skilled tasks in carrying out a variety of maintenance. Assignments may include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power operated devices, some of the tools of certain skilled trades and other equipment. Assignments may also include the occasional operation of trucks and other automotive or construction equipment incidental to regular duties. Work is normally performed under the direct supervision of the building maintenance technicians and/or the superintendent who issues general or specific orders depending on the assignment. Work results are usually checked for conformance with established standards.

• Ability to read, write and/or follow oral instructions.
• Ability to learn the use of hand and power tools incidental to assigned tasking.
• Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and at times under unfavorable conditions.
• Ability to/learn to hitch various trailers and tow loads.
• Performs the more complex semi-skilled work in city buildings.
• Repairs and upkeeps all tools for building maintenance.
• Performs related work as required.

• Knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.

Education and Experience
High School graduate or equivalent.
Required Licenses or Certificates
Must possess valid Mississippi driver’s license.

Physical requirements involves frequent walking, standing, bending stopping, some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects of 50+ pounds and occasionally objects up to 100+ pounds, with the assistance of other employees and/or equipment as appropriate. Requires the ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information.
