Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Senior Citizens Program Coordinator, the Recreation Aide participates in implementing activity programs for senior citizens. Encourages the participants in individual and group leisure activities related to their needs, abilities and interests which promotes the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual needs of the clients. The Recreation Aide leads games and group activities, helps plan and produce parties. This individual will interact with the public to ensure a safe, pleasant, and productive recreational experience.

Essential Job Functions

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
• Using excellent customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public.
• Assists in the planning, organizing, and directing activity programs for the clients. Leisure activities will include physical, creative, cognitive, social, spiritual and community programs in accordance with clients’ needs.
• Participates in seasonal and special event programs to mark occasions for clients.
• Assists with sign-up procedures for trips and special classes, including creating sign-up sheets, completing trip applications, checking forms for complete medical background information, and collecting fees.
• Puts Client Service First: Ensures that clients, families and visitors receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights.
• Encourages social communication through both individual and group activities.
• Documents client attendance and participation level (s) at all leisure activities, writes progress notes, and attends care plan meetings as appropriate.
• Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in leisure activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment.
• Ability to provide direction to volunteers as needed during leisure services activities.
• Orientates new clients to the center’s leisure services programs.
• Ability to keep clean and maintain the senior center’s equipment by keeping storage areas tidy – reporting equipment needs/equipment safety needs to the coordinator.
• Responsible for the up keep of the facility to include sweeping/mopping floors, trash removal/disposal cleaning rest rooms etc.
• Maintains all files on clients and responsible for all meal applications.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must posses required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Must possess current unencumbered valid state driver’s license.
• Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, clients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Must possess the ability to understand and follow the directions of the center coordinator.
• Position requires considerable knowledge of resuscitation and other first aid measures and skill in their use. American Heart Association CPR certification preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of leisure activities and rules of various games and activities.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessary by work assignments.
• Knowledge of standard office equipment, including a computer and knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel other software as needed by the Department.
• Must have the ability to manage e-mail and scheduling systems.

Education and Experience

Must possess, as a minimum, a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Prior experience in leisure activities related tasks for seniors preferred.

Required Licenses or Certificates

Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50 + pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors.
